The upgrade would be to see what later OS X version the computer is capable of using.

That is the path to be able to get and use a later version iTunes.

Check the minimum specification for the iPhone regarding Mac OS X. It should say

what the computer needs to be running; however an older intel-based Mac could be

able to run newer OS X than Snow Leopard 10.6.8 depending on the hardware specs.

So, there are two other options if the computer cannot use El Capitan due to age or

lack of specification, after 10.6.8; the Apple Store online sells Lion 10.7 and Mountain

Lion 10.8 (unavailable in App Store directly) and you get a download code by email.
